Best After Hours Answering Service in 2026: 8 Compared on Cost

For owners who miss calls at night, on weekends and on holidays. Eight after-hours answering services compared on what night calls cost, who answers and how urgent calls reach you.

Matt Horner Matt Horner Co-Founder Published 22 min read

Looking for the best after hours answering service for your business? We compared 8 services for US businesses on what after-hours phone answering costs, who picks up at 2am and how an urgent call reaches you.

Our pick for most small businesses is Jodie: it answers every call, nights, weekends and holidays included, for a flat $49 a month with unlimited minutes.

Most live services bill by the minute, and some charge extra at night. Here is the honest shortlist.

Key takeaways

  1. Jodie is the best after hours answering service for most US small businesses. It answers every call 24/7, holidays included, for a flat $49 a month with unlimited minutes.
  2. At 100 night calls a month, published prices start at $49 (Jodie), $199 (Moneypenny AI) and $212.50 (Smith.ai AI). The cheapest live person is Specialty Answering Service at $269, and Ruby is $720.
  3. Check what nights cost. PATLive and Smith.ai say a 2am call costs the same as a 2pm one. ReceptionHQ adds a surcharge to calls outside 5am to 7pm MST on weekdays.
  4. Ask how an urgent call reaches you. On Jodie Basic the caller's details arrive by email and in the app straight away. Professional ($99) can put chosen callers straight through to you or your on-call tech.
  5. With about 40 night calls a month or fewer, Smith.ai's pay-per-call AI can cost less than Jodie. Above that, Jodie's $49 is the lowest published price we found, and a heat wave or cold snap does not change it.

What an after-hours answering service actually is (and what it is not)

An after-hours answering service answers your business phone when you are closed: in the evening, overnight, on weekends and on holidays.

You will also see it sold as after-hours phone answering or after-hours call answering. You can use an answering service after-hours only, or around the clock.

It works in three steps:

  1. You forward your number when you close. Call forwarding passes your calls on to the service. You keep your own number.
  2. It answers in your business name. It talks to the caller and takes their details, or books them in.
  3. It tells you what came in. It also flags what is urgent.

There are four ways US owners cover calls after 5pm:

  • Voicemail. It is free, but many night and weekend customers try the next business instead of leaving a message.
  • Forward to your own cell phone. It costs nothing, but you are on call every night.
  • A live answering service. A person, often called an agent, answers. You pay per call or per minute, so check what nights cost.
  • An AI receptionist. Software answers at once, at any hour. You pay a flat price, per call or by the minute.

Some services mix a person and AI. This is called hybrid cover. Smith.ai and Moneypenny both sell an AI receptionist and live receptionists.

You may also see the term after-hours virtual receptionist: a person or AI who answers your calls from somewhere else. For daytime and overflow cover, see our main answering service comparison.

What an after-hours answering service is not:

  • Not voicemail.
  • Not a phone system auto-attendant, like the menus in Nextiva or Ooma Office, that reads out your hours.
  • Not a call center that makes sales calls for you.
  • Not an emergency service. Anyone in danger should call 911.
Hear Jodie answer a real call, from the first ring to the summary in your inbox.

How we ranked these after-hours answering services

We judged every service on six things:

  • Cost of 100 night calls. What 100 calls a month, each 2 minutes long, cost on the cheapest plan each provider publishes, before sales tax where the provider says so. Setup fees are listed separately.
  • Nights, weekends and holidays. Whether a person or AI picks up at 2am, or the call goes to voicemail. Also whether calls outside business hours cost more.
  • How an urgent call reaches you. Whether the service can put a caller through to your cell phone or only passes on a message, and on which plan. Also how the message reaches you: by email, in an app or by SMS.
  • How you are billed. Flat monthly, per call or per minute, and what the plan includes.
  • Contract and notice. The minimum term, and how much notice you give to leave.
  • Free trial. How long it lasts, and whether you need a credit card.

After Jodie, a service moves up for each of these it meets, and ties go to the cheaper one at 100 calls:

  • It answers overnight at no extra charge.
  • It publishes a price you can work out.
  • You can leave within a month.
  • It offers a free trial.

We read each provider's own pricing pages and terms on October 15, 2026. We did not call each service as a customer.

Where a provider does not publish a figure, we say "not published" rather than guess.

Jodie is our own product. We rank it first, and we show where other services cost less or do things Jodie does not.

The best after-hours answering services in 2026

We compared 8 after-hours answering service companies that sell to US small businesses. Jodie comes first because every call costs the same flat price at any hour.

After that, services move up for each check they pass:

  • Nights at no extra charge
  • A published price
  • No long contract
  • A free trial

Every pick has a "best for", so read the one that sounds like you.

1. Jodie, best for owner-run businesses that miss calls after hours

  • From $49 a month
  • Flat price, unlimited minutes
  • Answers 24/7, holidays included
  • 7-day free trial, no card
  • Month to month, no setup fee

Best suited for

Trades and small businesses that cannot pick up after hours, and want every night caller handled the same way for one flat price.

See Jodie's plans

Jodie is an AI receptionist. She answers in your business name, asks the questions you set and takes the caller's details.

What you get

  • A summary straight after the call, by email and in the Jodie app, with the recording and transcript.
  • If a caller asks something she cannot answer, she takes the question down so you can call back.
  • You keep your number. Forward it to Jodie when you close, or all day if you like. Turning forwarding off takes a minute.

What it costs

  • Basic: $49 a month with unlimited minutes, under fair use of up to 1,000 calls a month. Prices are before sales tax.
  • The same price at 3am, on weekends and on holidays. There is no setup fee, and you pay month to month.
  • Professional ($99) adds appointment booking, call transfers and team members. Premium ($199) adds Zapier integrations and priority support.
  • Under about 40 night calls a month, Smith.ai's AI can cost less. Its free plan covers 25 calls, then charges $3.00 a call.

Watch out for: some customers would rather talk to a human than an AI, and Basic does not book jobs or put calls through.

2. Smith.ai, best for AI answering with live receptionists on call

  • AI: free for 25 calls, then $150 for 75
  • Live receptionists from $300 for 30 calls
  • Same price at 2pm and 2am
  • Month to month
  • No setup fee

Best suited for

Firms that want AI on night calls, with live receptionists from the same company, and are happy to pay per call.

Jodie vs Smith.ai

Smith.ai sells two things: an AI receptionist and live receptionists. Both answer 24/7, and its pricing page says "Calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same."

What you get

  • An AI receptionist, priced per call. Both AI plans include AI scheduling and call routing.
  • Live receptionists, also priced per call. Extras cost per call too: booking an appointment is $1.50.
  • No setup fees on live plans, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and month-to-month terms.

What it costs

  • AI Free: 25 calls a month, then $3.00 a call.
  • AI Pro: $150 for 75 calls, then $2.50 a call. At 100 calls, Pro costs $212.50.
  • Live: Starter is $300 a month for 30 calls, then $11.50 a call. Basic is $810 a month for 90 calls, then $10.50 a call, so 100 calls cost $915.
  • At 200 calls, the cheapest AI option is the 150-call Pro plan: $270, plus 50 extra calls at $2.30 each, so $385.

Watch out for: every call adds to the bill, so a heat wave that doubles your night calls nearly doubles the meter.

3. Specialty Answering Service, best for live answering on a budget

  • From $44 a month + $1.54 a minute
  • Billed by the second
  • Answers 24 hours a day
  • No weekend or holiday fees
  • 14-day free trial, no card
  • No contract

Best suited for

Owners who want a live person on night calls at the lowest published per-minute price, with a long free trial.

Specialty Answering Service, often called SAS, is a live answering service. Its operators answer "24 hours a day".

What you get

  • Billing by the second, not by the rounded-up minute. A call that lasts 1 minute and 10 seconds costs 70 seconds.
  • No holiday or weekend fees. Its pricing table shows none on any plan.
  • A free trial of 14 days or 200 minutes, with no credit card.
  • No setup fee and no contract. You can change or cancel at any time.

What it costs

  • Economy, $44 a month: no minutes included, then $1.54 a minute.
  • $159 a month: 100 minutes, then $1.44 a minute.
  • $269 a month: 220 minutes, then $1.44 a minute. That is enough for 100 calls of 2 minutes.
  • At 100 calls, SAS is $269. That is the lowest published price for a live person among our 8 picks.

Watch out for: you still pay by the minute, so long, chatty night calls add up: a 6-minute call costs three times a 2-minute one.

4. PATLive, best for 100% US-based receptionists with no night fees

  • From $49 a month + $2.99 a minute
  • 100% US-based, no AI
  • No night or weekend fees
  • 14-day free trial
  • No contract, no setup fee

Best suited for

Businesses that want a person, never AI, on every night call, answered from the US at the daytime rate.

PATLive offers "100% human answering, 100% US-based receptionists", 24/7.

What you get

  • "No night or weekend fees," its page says. Holidays are included too.
  • You pay only for live time. It bills only the time a receptionist is live on your call, not for writing up notes after the call.
  • A 14-day free trial on any plan.
  • No contract. You can change plans or cancel at any time.

What it costs

  • Pay as you go, $49 a month, then $2.99 a minute.
  • Minute bundles:
    • 50 minutes for $99, then $2.29 a minute
    • 100 minutes for $189, then $2.09 a minute
    • 200 minutes for $349, then $1.99 a minute, which covers 100 calls of 2 minutes
  • Prices are "plus government taxes and fees", and PATLive charges no fees of its own on top.

Watch out for: a human-only, US-based team costs more per minute than SAS or MAP: $349 at 100 calls, against $269 at SAS.

5. MAP Communications, best for English and Spanish answering

  • From $49 a month + $1.37 a minute
  • US-based, English and Spanish
  • 24/7 on every plan
  • 7-day free trial, no card
  • No long-term contract

Best suited for

Businesses with Spanish-speaking callers that want a US-based live team to answer at night.

MAP Communications is a US-based live answering service. It suits you if many of your callers would rather speak Spanish, at any hour.

What you get

  • 24/7 answering in English and Spanish on every plan, with a toll-free number.
  • A 7-day free trial, with no credit card.
  • No long-term contracts.

What it costs

  • Pay as you go, $49 a month: no minutes included, then $1.37 a minute. Message delivery is free.
  • Business, $179 a month: 125 minutes, then $1.30 a minute. At 100 calls of 2 minutes, that is $276.50: $179 plus 75 extra minutes.
  • Enterprise, $339 a month: 250 minutes, then $1.28 a minute.
  • Not published: MAP does not publish a setup fee, and its pages do not say whether night calls cost more.

Watch out for: the minutes run out on a busy night, so price the plan for your busiest month, not your average one.

6. Ruby, best for a premium personal touch on every call

  • From $250 a month for 50 minutes
  • Live receptionists
  • 24/7, holidays included
  • No setup fees
  • Month to month

Best suited for

Law firms and client-facing businesses that want a warm, live receptionist on every call and will pay for it.

Jodie vs Ruby

Ruby is a live receptionist service. Its plans cover calls 24/7, including after hours, on weekends and on holidays.

What you get

  • No extra fees for "coverage during certain periods", it says, so a night minute costs the same as a day one.
  • Notifications in its mobile app and by email.
  • Bilingual answering and HIPAA-compliant services, available as options.
  • No fees for activation, onboarding or setup. Plans run month to month, and new plans come with a 21-day money-back guarantee. Its pricing page does not list a free trial.

What it costs

  • A bundle of receptionist minutes each month:
    • 50 minutes for $250
    • 100 minutes for $395
    • 200 minutes for $720
    • 500 minutes for $1,725
  • At 100 calls of 2 minutes, you need the 200-minute plan, so Ruby is $720 a month.
  • Extra minutes: its pricing page does not show the rate.

Watch out for: the price, as a polished, live person on every call costs $720 at 100 night calls, against $49 for Jodie Basic.

7. Moneypenny, best for per-call AI with a live team in the same firm

  • AI: $69 a month for 25 calls
  • Live: $165 a month for 50 minutes
  • 24/7, bilingual live team
  • No contract, 30 days' notice
  • Mobile app

Best suited for

Firms that want to start with a per-call AI and have live receptionists from the same company when they need them.

Jodie vs Moneypenny

Moneypenny sells live receptionists and an AI receptionist in the US. Both are priced on its US pricing page, and both answer 24/7.

What you get

  • "Human escalation" on every AI plan, so a caller can be passed to a person.
  • Bilingual answering and a mobile app on the live plans.
  • No contract. You give 30 days' notice to cancel, from your next billing date. It does not publish a free trial or a setup fee.

What it costs

  • AI, priced per call:
    • 25 calls for $69 a month, then $2.49 a call
    • 50 calls for $99, then $2.39 a call
    • 100 calls for $199, then $2.19 a call
  • Live, priced by the minute:
    • 50 minutes for $165 a month, then $2.28 a minute
    • 100 minutes for $265, then $2.12 a minute
    • 200 minutes for $422, then $1.91 a minute
  • At 100 calls, the AI is $199 and live answering is $422.

Watch out for: every call or minute is billed, and at 100 night calls its AI costs about four times as much as Jodie Basic.

8. AnswerConnect, best for steady night volume on a big minute bundle

  • From $350 a month for 200 minutes
  • $1.85 to $2.50 a minute over
  • Live, US-based, 24/7
  • Month to month
  • $49.99 setup on some plans

Best suited for

Firms with steady, predictable night volume that want a live US team and will use most of a big minute bundle.

Jodie vs AnswerConnect

AnswerConnect is a live answering service with US-based receptionists. You buy a bundle of minutes each month.

What you get

  • Answers 24/7.
  • Plans run month to month.
  • A demo call, rather than a free trial.

What it costs

  • Entry, $350 a month: 200 minutes, then $2.50 a minute, plus a $49.99 setup fee.
  • Growth, $395 a month: 300 minutes, then $1.85 a minute, with no setup fee. Its Standard plan also charges $1.85 a minute over and a $49.99 setup fee.
  • At 100 calls of 2 minutes, Entry covers you for $350, plus the setup fee once.
  • These are the last prices it published. Its pricing page now asks for your details before it shows any plans.

Watch out for: a big bundle you may not use, so if you only get 30 night calls, you still pay $350.

Costs are for 100 calls of 2 minutes each, on the cheapest plan each provider publishes, checked October 15, 2026.

  • Tax: Jodie's prices are before sales tax, PATLive adds government taxes and fees, and the others do not say.
  • Setup fees: one-off setup fees are shown separately.
  • "Not published" means the provider does not say on its own pages.

We also checked four more:

  • Posh answers 24/7 with live receptionists, from $65 a month plus $2.30 a minute, rounded up to whole minutes. At 100 calls, its 200-minute plan is $420 (Jodie vs Posh).
  • AnswerForce sells 24/7 live answering but publishes no prices (Jodie vs AnswerForce).
  • ReceptionHQ is $170 for 100 calls plus sales tax, but adds an after-hours surcharge it does not state on that page.
  • Carly sells an AI receptionist as an add-on, with the price set on a call, so we could not cost it.

Do you need 24/7, or just evenings and weekends?

Look at two normal weeks of your call log. Count the calls that come in outside business hours: after 6pm, on weekends and on any holiday.

  • If they stop by 8pm and you are closed on Sundays, a service with longer daytime hours may be enough.
  • If any come overnight or on a holiday, choose real 24-hour cover. A 24 hour answering service picks up at 3am the same way it does at 3pm.

You do not have to use it all day. You can forward your phone only when you close.

Jodie picks up day or night, weekends and holidays included, whenever your calls are forwarded to her.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July are where cover most often slips. Ask for holidays to be included in writing.

How an urgent call reaches you at 2am

First, decide what counts as urgent for you. It might be:

  • No AC in a July heat wave.
  • No heat in January.
  • A burst pipe.

Everything else can wait for the morning.

A service can do three things with a night call:

  1. Put it through to your cell phone, or your on-call tech, now.
  2. Send you the details straight away, so you can call back.
  3. Log it for the morning.

A good service lets you set the rule, so a quote request does not wake you up. If you run an on-call rotation, ask if urgent calls can go to whoever is on call that night.

Here is how Jodie does it:

  • Every plan: the caller's details reach you by email and in the Jodie app straight after the call, with the recording and transcript.
  • Professional ($99) and Premium: you can set rules that put certain callers straight through to you or a coworker. Basic does not transfer calls.
  • Every caller hears your business name at 2am, just as they would at 2pm.

Few providers publish how this works. Smith.ai's live Starter plan includes one transfer destination, and Moneypenny's AI plans list human escalation. For the rest, use the questions below.

Booking night callers straight into your calendar is called appointment scheduling. It needs Jodie Professional or a provider's booking add-on, such as Smith.ai's $1.50 a call. Basic takes the details for you to book.

Which after-hours answering service fits your business?

The best after hours answering service for small business owners depends on how many night calls you get, and whether you want a person or AI. Find your row:

Your situation Night calls a month Our pick
HVAC or plumbing business that dispatches an on-call tech 20 to 200 Jodie Professional
Property manager with emergency maintenance calls 20 to 200 Jodie Professional
Owner who wants every night and weekend inquiry captured for the morning Any, up to 1,000 Jodie
Very few night calls and a tight budget Under 40 Smith.ai (free AI plan)
A live US person on every call, on a budget Up to 100 Specialty Answering Service
A human-only, US-based team, no AI at all Any PATLive
Many Spanish-speaking callers Any MAP Communications
Law firm that wants a person on every call Any Ruby

What results look like

Say you run a two-truck HVAC company. In a normal month you get about 60 calls after 6pm and on weekends, each around 2 minutes.

A heat wave can push that to 100. Here is what each volume costs on the plans we could price (Jodie's prices are before sales tax).

Plan 20 night calls 60 night calls 100 night calls
Jodie Basic $49 $49 $49
Jodie Professional (adds transfers and booking) $99 $99 $99
Smith.ai AI (per call) $0 (free plan) $105 $212.50
MAP Communications (a person) $103.80 $179 $276.50
Specialty Answering Service (a person) $105.60 $187.80 $269
PATLive (a person) $99 $230.80 $349

Smith.ai's AI can cost less at low volumes:

  • Up to about 40 night calls a month, it costs less than Jodie Basic. The first 25 calls are free, then each is $3.00.
  • If you need booking, its free plan costs less than Jodie Professional up to about 58 calls.

Above that, Jodie's $49 is the lowest published price on this list.

A heat wave or cold snap that doubles your calls nearly doubles a metered bill. At 200 calls:

  • Smith.ai's cheapest AI plan is $385.
  • Jodie stays $49, because fair use runs up to 1,000 calls a month.

If you want a person rather than AI, SAS at $269 for 100 calls is the lowest published live price among our picks.

Here is what Jodie customers say:

"Jodie has blown me away with the way she speaks to customers. It's so natural."
KarlElectrician, Bristol
"Voice quality is great, you'd never know it's AI. Customers have commented on how helpful the service is."
David W.Glazing, Liverpool
"If I don't answer my mobile and it goes to voicemail, Jodie takes the call instead. I never used to check voicemails, but now I get everything straight to my email, which is so much better."
Paul T.Driving School, Stoke

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Night fees. Do nights, weekends and holidays cost more, or need an add-on?
  • At 2am. Who answers, and where are they based?
  • Urgent calls. How does an urgent call reach me or my on-call tech, and on which plan?
  • Billing. How are calls billed: per call, per minute or per second?
    • Are minutes rounded up?
    • Do wrong numbers and spam calls count?
    • What happens when the minutes run out?
  • Contract. What is the minimum term, and how much notice do I give?
  • Your number. Can I keep my number and forward only when I close?
  • Recordings. Where are recordings and transcripts kept? (Jodie: processed in the United States and Ireland under a data processing addendum, and you can turn recording off.)
  • Medical practices. Will the provider sign a business associate agreement?

Frequently asked questions

How much does an after-hours answering service cost?
Jodie costs a flat $49 a month before sales tax, with unlimited minutes. Live services start at $44 to $49 a month plus $1.37 to $2.99 a minute. At 100 two-minute night calls, the other published plans run from $199 (Moneypenny AI) and $212.50 (Smith.ai AI) to $915 (Smith.ai live), and the cheapest live person is Specialty Answering Service at $269.
What is the best after-hours answering service for a small business?
For most small businesses it is Jodie: 24/7 answering for a flat $49 a month, with unlimited minutes and no night surcharge. If you want a live person, Specialty Answering Service is $269 for 100 calls and PATLive is $349 with a fully US-based team. For a premium touch on every call, look at Ruby.
Do answering services charge more for nights, weekends and holidays?
Some do: ReceptionHQ adds a surcharge to calls outside 5am to 7pm MST on weekdays. PATLive says it has no night or weekend fees, Smith.ai says 2pm and 2am calls cost the same, and Specialty Answering Service lists no weekend or holiday fees. Jodie charges the same flat price at any hour, holidays included.
Can an AI answering service handle emergency calls after hours?
Yes, it can take down an urgent call and get it to you fast. Jodie sends every caller's details by email and in the app straight after the call, and on Professional it can put chosen callers straight through to you or your on-call tech. It is not an emergency service: anyone in danger should call 911.
How does an urgent call reach me or my on-call tech at 2am?
It depends on the service and the plan. With Jodie, the caller's details reach you by email and in the app straight after the call on every plan, and on Professional and Premium you can set rules that put chosen callers straight through to you or a coworker. Ask any provider how it decides what is urgent and who it calls first.
Can I use an answering service only after hours and keep my business number?
Yes. You keep your number, turn on call forwarding when you close and turn it off in the morning. Jodie answers whenever your calls are forwarded to her, and turning forwarding off takes a minute.
What is the difference between an after-hours answering service and voicemail?
Voicemail records a message if the caller leaves one, and many callers do not. An answering service talks to the caller, takes their details or books them in, and tells you what is urgent. Jodie also sends you the recording and transcript of every call.
Is an after-hours answering service worth it?
If one job from a night or weekend call is worth more than the monthly fee, it pays for itself. Voicemail is free, but callers with an urgent job often call the next number instead. Try it on your own number for a week: Jodie's 7-day free trial needs no credit card.
