What to know about call diversion on Telstra
Changing the 15 second ring time
A Telstra mobile rings for 15 seconds before an unanswered call diverts. Telstra says you can change this to 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds, and publishes the code as **61*101** followed by the seconds and #, for example **61*101**30#. The code contains 101, the MessageBank number, and Telstra does not publish a version that sets both a different number and a longer ring time. On an iPhone, turn off Live Voicemail first or the ring time stays at 15 seconds.
What ##004# does
Dialling ##004# removes all three conditional diversions at once: no answer, busy and unreachable. It also puts the ring time back to 15 seconds. An all-calls divert is not one of the three, so turn that off with ##21#.
Divert every call by text
For an all-calls divert you can skip the code and text Telstra instead. Send CFU ON followed by the number to 144, for example CFU ON 0400123456. Text CFU OFF to 144 to stop it, or CFU Status to check it.
No diverting overseas on newer services
Telstra mobiles activated on or after 8 October 2003 cannot divert calls to an international number. Services activated before that date still can.
Business mobiles and home phones
Telstra publishes its mobile codes on its small business support pages, and they are the same for personal and business mobiles. Home phones are different: no star-star, no *11, and no unreachable option. Telstra's home phone guide puts the default no-answer delay at 20 seconds, about seven rings, and says it can be set anywhere from 5 to 55 seconds.
Divert calls from your phone's settings
Your phone may also offer call forwarding in its settings, depending on your device and plan. The iPhone Call Forwarding switch sends every call on. Use a supported no-answer option if you want your phone to ring first.
iPhone
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Phone (on older iOS, Settings then Phone).
- Tap Call Forwarding and switch it on. If you use two SIMs, choose your business line first.
- Tap Forward To and enter the number calls should go to.
- Go back. A forwarding icon shows in the status bar while it is on.
Android
- Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Tap Calls (or Supplementary services, depending on the phone), then Call forwarding.
- Choose When unanswered so your phone rings first and only missed calls move on.
- Enter the number, tap Turn on, and pick the right SIM if asked.
If the code doesn't work
"Connection problem or invalid MMI code"
The network did not accept the request. Check you have signal, turn off Wi-Fi calling and aeroplane mode, then dial the code again exactly as shown.
"Setting activation failed" or "unsuccessful"
The network refused the divert. Some plans block diverts to other numbers, and some networks want the number in international form. Check the notes on this page, or set it up in your phone settings instead.
Calls still go to voicemail
Voicemail is itself a divert, and only one can be active for each condition. Setting a new divert replaces the voicemail one. If calls still reach voicemail, cancel all diverts and set yours again.
Telstra call diversion questions
How do I divert calls on my Telstra mobile?
Dial ** then the diversion code (61 for no answer, 67 for busy, 62 for unreachable or 21 for all calls), then *, the number with its area code, then *11# and press Call. For example, **61*0400123456*11# sends missed calls to 0400 123 456.
How do I turn off call forwarding on Telstra?
Dial ## then the code and # to turn off one diversion, for example ##61# for no answer or ##21# for all calls. ##004# removes all three conditional diversions at once.
Is call forwarding free on Telstra?
Telstra says call forwarding is included in all plans with unlimited call allowance. On a Telstra home phone, your standard call charges apply to forwarded calls.
How long does a Telstra mobile ring before it diverts?
Fifteen seconds by default. Telstra lets you change it to 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds, and iPhone users need to turn off Live Voicemail to go beyond 15.
How do I check if call forwarding is on with Telstra?
Dial *# then the code and #. For example, *#61# shows the no-answer diversion and *#21# shows the all-calls diversion.
How do I forward my Telstra home phone to my mobile?
Lift the handset, dial *21, key in your mobile number, press # and hang up. To have the home phone ring first, use *61 instead. Dial #21# or #61# to turn it off.
